What is a measure word?

In Mandarin, a number usually needs a measure word before the noun. You say 一个苹果, 一杯水, 一张票, and 一碗面. The measure word shows the type, shape, or unit of the noun.

English has similar patterns in phrases like a cup of water or a piece of paper, but Chinese uses measure words much more often.

Start with the most useful measure words

Beginners should learn 个, 杯, 碗, 张, 本, 件, 条, and 只 first. These appear often in restaurants, shopping, classrooms, and travel situations.

Do not worry about every classifier at once. Use common phrases repeatedly until they sound normal: 一杯咖啡, 一碗牛肉面, 一张票, 一本书, 一件衣服.

Why 个 is not always enough

个 is common and often understood, but precise measure words sound more natural. Saying 一碗牛肉面 is better than 一个牛肉面 because noodles are served as a bowl.
